I started out with scissors, glue, paper, a ruler, razor blade, and a cutting mat for the razor blade. Oh, was it fun. I loved using the razor blade, but it's not neccessary to start out. As more modern tools and techniques came, the razor blade has lost it's usage power, but it is still handy to have around. If you are careful, I use it for many things other than for cutting.
I believe paper is the most vital element to paper crafting. I mean, how can we paper craft if we don't have paper? My most used paper is white cardstock. If you are making a card, a thick cardstock is the best. I use a lot of 110 lb white cardstock. Stampin' Up! has made an extra thick white cardstock which I love using, especially for card bases (the part that folds like a card). You can step up your card and use colored paper.
After you have a strong sturdy card base, you will want to decorate it. The easiest way, is to use paper that has a print on it. There are tons of different types of patterned paper out there. You can even use pages out of a magazine, catalog, or junk mail!! They sky is the limit. 🩵 I love paper 🩵. There were not as many options when I was growing up and I started collecting the cool papers I found. I gave up when the industry exploded. 🤪 I hope you enjoy finding papers you like and using them in your projects.....just don't get addicted....which I am NOT!
Seriously, once you get paper, the next important thing you need is a good pair of scissors. No joke. In order to paper craft, you need a way to cut the paper. Cutting paper does not harm the paper. No paper died from cutting it. Boy, do I love 🩵 to cut paper. I love 🩵finding the most detailed scissors ever. Close to My Heart 🩵 wins. But, you cannot get ahold of one of those anymore. Finding fine tipped scissors is real easy to do these days. They are everywhere. I haven't found a pair of detail scissors that I didn't like. Detail scissors are small and should fit comfortably around your fingers. If you come across tiny scissors, these are not the detail scissors I am referring to. They are too tiny. You want to be able to "fussy cut" around images and having a good tip is the tip I'd like to give to you about scissors.... & cutting...& being fussy about cutting...& to enjoy cutting...& have fun cutting.....
Oh, my goodness, if you are going to cut out paper, you definitely need a way to attach it to another piece of paper!! Are you shocked that glue is the next thing you need? Really, elmers glue does the job. I like using acid free, toxic free liquid or white glue. There are a lot of good glues to choose from. You can even use tape. Scotch's double sided tape is acid free and I used it all the time. I scrapbook, so I prefer to use adhesives that last over time. Plus, I get told that my cards get saved because they are handmade by me. 💙
Believe it or not, these three items: paper, scissors and glue are all you really need to make a card.
When you are asked to bring adhesives and cutting tools to a card class, I go over these supplies here. If you don't have a tool or something the instructor asked you to bring, don't sweat it. Bring what you can and go have fun. Usually, the instructor has some you can borrow or ask someone who is willing to share. If not, find a different class to attend.
